What does “transition” mean? Do I qualify as being in transition?
Being in transition means that something in your life is changing that requires you to explore new ways of being. Women in Nature (WIN) trips are designed to help you reflect on where you’ve been, where you are now, and where you would like to be. This could be the result of either a sudden event or subtle, gradual shift.
How much do trips cost?
Day trips are $5. If you are unable to pay, you may do volunteer work instead. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds.
What items do I need to bring?
FOOD: Pack a healthy sack lunch: a sandwich, fresh or dried fruit, nuts, bagel and cream cheese, pretzels, cheese and crackers, yogurt, and/or energy bars, etc. Bring more than you typically eat for lunch. A few cookies or a bit of chocolate is a nice treat! AVOID soda, coffee, potato chips, candy bars and other junk food. Also bring two liters of water.
CLOTHING / GEAR: We want you to be warm, dry and comfortable! Please review this list carefully, but don't run out and buy it all unless you're looking for an excuse to treat yourself. Thanks to the generous support of REI, we have a collection of clothing and gear available for use on our hikes. Let us know what you need and we'll have it ready for you. Please indicate your shoe and clothing sizes.

• Long-sleeved shirt, preferably not made of cotton. However cotton is okay if you carry an extra shirt in case the other gets wet or damp. Cotton does not insulate very well against cold. When wet from rain, sweat, or both, it stays wet and actually keeps you cold.
• Mid-weight pullover fleece top, wool sweater, or long underwear top
• Fleece jacket
• Waterproof raincoat
• Nylon or other non-cotton hiking pants (please, no jeans)
• Wool or synthetic long underwear bottoms (optional)
• Rainpants
• Wool or synthetic socks
• Sturdy boots, preferably waterproof
• Warm hat
• Mittens or gloves
• Baseball cap or other hat (optional)

What if I am not an experienced hiker?
That’s okay! All of our hikes are designated easy to moderate. Many participants have never hiked before or it has been sometime since they have been hiking. Our goal is to provide you with an enjoyable and safe experience, and you will never be asked to exceed your capabilities. Each trip is led by two mentors who set a pace based upon participants’ needs and abilities. In some cases, the group may be able to split into two differently paced groups.
What usually happens on WIN hikes?
Two experienced trip leaders pick up participants at designated Park & Ride locations in the Seattle area. Once at the trailhead, the trip leaders set a tone that values safety and self-care, encourages women to reflect on their life transitions, and creates a sense of fun and adventure. During the actual hike or snowshoe, the group conducts activities which promote reflection, sharing, creativity, and an appreciation of nature. Afterwards, the closing circle includes an activity which helps each participant consider how she can incorporate her WIN experience into her everyday life.
